The Dark Night <\/em>

\n“On a night of darkness,
\nIn love’s anxiety of longing kindled,
\nO blessed chance!
\nI left by none beheld,
\nMy house in sleep and silence stilled.
\nIn darkness and secure,
\nBy the secret ladder and disguised,
\nO blessed venture!
\nIn darkness and concealed,
\nMy house is sleep and silence stilled.
\nBy dark of blessed night,
\nIn secrecy, for no one saw me
\nAnd I regarded nothing,
\nMy only light and guide
\nThe one that in my heart was burning.
\nThis guided, led me on
\nMore surely than the radiance of noon
\nTo where there waited one
\nWho was to me well known,
\nAnd in a place where no one came in view.
\nO night, you were the guide!
\nO night more desirable than dawn!
\nO dark of night you joined
\nBeloved with belov’d one,
\nBelov’d one in Beloved now transformed!
\nUpon my flowering breast,
\nEntirely kept for him and him alone,
\nThere he stayed and slept
\nAnd I caressed him
\nIn breezes from the fan of cedars blown.
\nBreezes on the battlements –
\nAs I was spreading out his hair,
\nWith his unhurried hand
\nHe wounded my neck
\nAnd all my sense left suspended there.
\nI stayed, myself forgotten,
\nMy countenance against my love reclined;
\nAll ceased, and self forsaken
\nI left my care behind
\nAmong the lilies, unremembered.”
\nHere, John writes of rejoicing in his union with God by the path of spiritual negation. Very sensual, which is common among the mystics.
\nThere have been times past when the sense of God’s presence and my great desire for God have been so great, that I have experienced spiritually, emotionally, and physically such things – such passion, such… I just don’t know how to describe it.
