From this morning’s Old Testament Reading:
\nWisdom 1:16\u00e2\u20ac\u201d2:11, 21-24 (NRSV)<\/strong>
\nBut the ungodly by their words and deeds summoned death; considering him a friend, they pined away and made a covenant with him, because they are fit to belong to his company. For they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves,
\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Short and sorrowful is our life,
\nand there is no remedy when a life comes to its end,
\nand no one has been known to return from Hades.
\nFor we were born by mere chance,
\nand hereafter we shall be as though we had never been,
\nfor the breath in our nostrils is smoke,
\nand reason is a spark kindled by the beating of our hearts;
\nwhen it is extinguished, the body will turn to ashes,
\nand the spirit will dissolve like empty air.
\nOur name will be forgotten in time,
\nand no one will remember our works;
\nour life will pass away like the traces of a cloud,
\nand be scattered like mist
\nthat is chased by the rays of the sun
\nand overcome by its heat.
\nFor our allotted time is the passing of a shadow,
\nand there is no return from our death,
\nbecause it is sealed up and no one turns back.<\/p>\n


\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that exist,
\nand make use of the creation to the full as in youth.
\nLet us take our fill of costly wine and perfumes,
\nand let no flower of spring pass us by.
\nLet us crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither.
\nLet none of us fail to share in our revelry;
\neverywhere let us leave signs of enjoyment,
\nbecause this is our portion, and this our lot.
\nLet us oppress the righteous poor man;
\nlet us not spare the widow
\nor regard the gray hairs of the aged.
\nBut let our might be our law of right,
\nfor what is weak proves itself to be useless.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d
\nThus they reasoned, but they were led astray,
\nfor their wickedness blinded them,
\nand they did not know the secret purposes of God,
\nnor hoped for the wages of holiness,
\nnor discerned the prize for blameless souls;
\nfor God created us for incorruption,
\nand made us in the image of his own eternity,<\/em><\/strong>
\nbut through the devil’s envy death entered the world,
